Opis

Edited by Piotr Uhma

Memory laws (les lois mémorielles) represent a growing and influential field at the crossroads of law, history, politics, and society. These legal instruments regulate how states interpret and engage with the past, while also shaping national identity, collective memory, and the boundaries of acceptable public discourse. From criminalizing the denial of historical atrocities to codifying official narratives through parliamentary declarations, memory laws raise pressing questions about freedom of expression, historical truth, and the exercise of political power.

This volume brings together contributions from legal scholars and practitioners across Europe and Israel, following an international symposium hosted by the Institute of Law, Economics, and Administration at the University of National Education Commission in Krakow. The collected chapters explore how memory laws function within different legal systems, how they impact social and international relations, and how they are taught, challenged, and interpreted. Together, they offer a critical examination of how law engages with the past—and how it shapes the present.
