Recycling supports in panel painting in Polish collection. [book in Polish]
Anna Maria Zadora
Summary
In the history of painting technology reasons for recycling painting supports are sometimes unknown and the presented samples point to variety of different reasons. Only in few cases attempts to determine the purpose of recycling and its scale can be made; and this is the aim of this book. The analysis of the recycled supports in panel painting is preceded by the history of panel painting (Chapter 1) which presents prospective historical and geographical range of the phenomenon.
Twenty-eight painting specimens have been analysed. The author defined similarities concerning recycling of painting supports and suggested their classification based on the methods of their recycling.
The first group includes the paintings where the simplest form of recycling has been applied i.e. covering avoid its face with another painting layer, which significantly changed the original composition but partly retained its features (Chapter 2). Chapter 3 presents second group of paintings and related method of recycling, where panel paintings have been adapted for reusing as painting supports.
The third group, which constitutes paintings, which were used as functional objects, is presented in Chapter 4. Chapter 5, in contrast, is concerned with supports in panel painting, which used to be treated as functional objects.
Another group, discussed in Chapter 6 includes paintings, which have been smuggled abroad. It is only apparently unrelated to the topic of the book. The presented examples show how all the methods available are used to change the original artistic function of a painting to disguise recognition and smuggle it. Other examples of untypical use constitute the last group of paintings discussed in Chapter 7.
Most of the described paintings have been photographed. 136 photographs constitute documentary part of the book. There are also: bibliography, index to photographs and a list of museums and churches, which made their collections available to the author.
